Glorifying terrorism via the UN. Palestinian terrorist Raed Abayat is hailed in this UN document, distributed at the behest of the UN's Palestinian representative, as a "martyr" and a victim of an extrajudicial killing. Nowhere does this letter to the Security Council mention that he was armed with an explosive device and an M-16 assault rifle at the time of his death. Similarly, Mohammed Ayad and Sufyan Abu Gharaba were in the process of trying to carry out an attack with a 30-kg bomb when they were stopped by Israelis Defence Forces. This detail escapes the letter, distributed courtesy of the UN, lamenting their deaths.

According to the Palestinian UN delegation Moneer Sokkar and Ashraf Ahallof are "martyrs". They were combatants, direct participants in firing rockets and attempted suicide-bombing. Sadly, Palestinian civilians also died. By using the trappings of civilian life and civilians as human shields, these terrorists violated the Geneva Conventions (Article 51(7)) and are directly responsible for their deaths. Civilian deaths are unfortunate, not shameful political currency for a Palestinian government dedicated to violence.

If there was any doubt about the Palestinian Authority's continuining embrace of terrorism (with or without Hamas), read this. A letter from the Palestinian observer to the Security Council describes bomb-makers as "martyrs." See IMRA "During a joint IDF, ISA, and Israel Police activity for the arrest of wanted Islamic Jihad terrorists in the village of Arabe, south of Jenin today, two wanted Islamic Jihad terrorists, Nidal Abu Sa'ade and Ahmed Tubasi, were killed after an exchange of fire erupted as the forces were trying to arrest them. A Border Police officer was severely wounded during the exchanges of fire." and YNET "One of those killed in the attack is Islamic Jihad's 'rocket engineer' Adnan Bustan, who became an expert at making al-Quds rockets, Islamic Jihad's version of Hamas' Qassam rocket."

Glorifying terrorism once again. Here is a letter from the Palestinian Ambassador to the UN on January 13, 2006 referring to two "martyrs" which he identifies in the annex to his letter. What he neglects to mention is that one of these "martyrs" died while detonating an explosive belt he was wearing, originally intending to use it on Israelis instead of himself. It also doesn't bother to tell us that he and the other "martyr," who died in a shoot out with Israeli forces, were part of a terrorist cell responsible for a suicide bombing in Israel that killed 5 civilians on October 26, 2005, and that three other terrorists who agreed to be taken into custody were not killed.
